Assignment
Read these two examples of long-form, environmental journalism, which will be the starting point for a conversation next week about narrative and the elements of digital storytelling. Be sure to watch the videos and interact with all components of the story.
- Altered Oceans — Part One: A Primeval Tide of Toxins — The Los Angeles Times
- Greenland is Melting Away — The New York Times
Before next class, submit a critique that generally answers the following questions about each piece. Write your critique of the first story before beginning to read the second.
- Substance: What, if anything, did you learn? What surprised you or caused confusion?
- Structure: Which sections of the story were most engaging? Which parts, if any, seemed distracting or boring?
- Compare and contrast: After critiqing each piece individually, now compare them. What makes each story succeed or fail for you as a reader? Would you recommend either of these articles to a friend?
Deadline: Submit your critiques on Canvas by midnight on Wednesday, February 1.
